3/12/07 - HW RUNNERS DOMINATE ELLIS TROPHY RACE

Hercules Wimbledon's cross country runners continued their impressive season by dominating the annual Ellis Trophy men's 5.5 miles cross country race in Richmond Park on Saturday.

While they easily won the six-a-side competition, Hercules Wimbledon's runners were narrowly beaten in the main 10-a-side contest for the Ellis Trophy because their four leading runners were among the top six in the field which took a wrong turning on the first of the two laps and lost about 400m on the rest of the field.

By the time they had got back on the right track they were down the field in 10th place and while three of them set about regaining the lead, the fourth, Belal Aly was so frustrated at what had happened that he dropped out of the race at the half-way point, a decision that almost certainly cost Hercules Wimbledon the chance of lifting the Ellis Trophy in which the club's scoring team of 10 finished runners-up.

Aly's fellow Egyptian, Hussein Aly Hamed, set about catching the leading runners and took his two Hercules Wimbledon clubmates Mike Halman and 16-year-old Andrew Penney with him. Aly Hamed proved a deserving winner of the individual race in 31 minutes 47 seconds with Halman second in 32:06 and Penney third in 32:18.

Completing the winning six-a-side team were Gary Blesson 11th in 33:09, veteran Peter Lee 13th in 33:17 and 15-year-old Liam White 16th in 33:35. The other four runners that made up the 10-to-score team which finished runners-up in the Ellis Trophy were Over 50 veteran Hugh Saxby (19th in 33:35), John Querstret (43rd in 36:18) and teenagers Geordie Logan (44th in 36:23) and Charlie Carrington (48th in 37:00).

Veterans Neil Robson, Frank Wood, Dave Betts, Maurice Sharp and Martin Miller were next Hercules Wimbledon runners to finish taking 56th, 57th, 60th, 68th and 74th positions in 37:43, 37:44, 37:54, 39:07 and 39:28.

Hercules Wimbledon fielded six runners in the Women's Dysart Cup 4.12 miles race with the club's leading runner Clare Grima finishing a strong fifth in 27:08. Twins Jennifer and Rosemary Fernando were 17th and 18th in 27:08 and 29:06, Sally Maddock 20th in 29:29, Isabel Sutherland 23rd in 29:51 and Rowena Hornshaw 51st in 35:16.

Three Hercules Wimbledon runners were in action for Surrey in a schools inter-counties cross country match at Princethorpe, near Rugby, Warwickshire. Joew Toomey finished ninth in the intermediate boys in 20:03, where he was the fourth member of the winning Surrey team. Hercules Wimbledon clubmate Geordie Logan was the ninth Surrey finisher taking 26th place in 20:44.

The team finished 25th out of the 69 to close in and would have been placed even higher had not one of their six runners gone off course and lost around 20 seconds. Three of the club's top runners, Keiran White, Adam Przedrzymirski and Deon Coetzee were also missing from the squad which was the fourth Surrey team to cross the line.

Jamie Helmer got the squad off tom a solid start as he brought the squad in 48th on the opening leg in 20 minutes 12 seconds. Justin Kelly then stormed through the field, passing almost 20 teams, to cover the second leg in 19:49 and handed over to Egyptian Belal Aly in 29th place. Aly had a steady run but lost around 20 seconds when he went off course at a critical point on the course. He still managed to hand over in 30th place completing the lap in 20:05 but complained: "There was no one there to tell me where to go."

Fourth stage runner and fellow Egyptian Hussein Aly hand a storming run clocking 19:09, the best Hercules Wimbledon time of the day, handing over to Phil Glynn in 20th place after clocking the seventh fastest time of his stage. Glynn fought hard to stay in contention, clocking 21:10 to hand over in 24th place before handing over to Neil Fraser, at 19, by far the youngest member of the team who anchored the sextet home with a time of 21:34 to hold onto 25th place.

Two other teenagers, Andrew Penney and Liam White had useful runs for the incomplete B team clocking 20:49 and 21:11, respectively, faster than some of the A team runners.
