25-09-06 - OLYMPIAN STEINLE HEADS 10 MILE ENTRIES British Olympic marathon runner Mark Steinle heads the entry for Sunday's triandrun 46th Geoff Moulden Wimbledon open 10 miles road race which is being organised by Hercules Wimbledon Athletic Club. Steinle, now 31, ran in the Millennium Olympic Games marathon in Sydney in 2000 and clocked the fastest marathon time this decade by a UK runner when he finished the Flora London marathon in 2002 in two hours nine minutes 17 seconds. His appearance at Wimbledon on Sunday will be only his third race of the year and his first competitive appearance for almost six months. His last race was finishing 25th in the Great Manchester Run 10km road race in May, placing him a good 15th in this year's UK rankings for the distance just there weeks after winning the Ted Pepper 10km road race at West Wickham in 31:02. His lack of racing is unlikely to prove a handicap on Sunday because he has been training hard - "bashing out the miles", according to one of his Blackheath and Bromley clubmates, with a view to securing a place in his club's team for the AAA six-stage road relay championship at Sutton Park, Birmingham, towards the end of next month. Unfortunately for organising club Hercules Wimbledon, their own Ian Horrocks, who won the race last year, will be unable to defend his title due to injury. Heading the women's entry for the 10 miles is Ranelagh's London marathon runner Marie Synnott-Wells, who works as a nurse specialist at St George's Hospital, Tooting. This year's 46th promotion of the event is being sponsored by triandrun, London's leading triathlon retailer with a newly-opened shop in the centre of Wimbledon on Wimbledon Hill Road. The race starts from Wimbledon Park Athletics Stadium, Wimbledon Park Road, at 11am and then passed along Wimbledon Park Road, Victoria Drive, Kingsmere Road, Inner Park Road, Parkside, Calonne Road, Burghley Road, Marryat Road, Somerset Road and past the All England tennis club in Church Road to complete the lap. Runners complete three laps of this circuit before returning along Wimbledon Park Road to finish on the track. The leading runner is expected to take about 50 minutes. While postal entries have now closed, entries will be accepted on the day at a cost of £10 each but anyone intending to enter on the day should arrive in plenty of time. Details of the event along with an entry form can be found on the Hercules Wimbledon website www.herculeswimbledonac.org.uk. There will be a medal for every finisher along with prizes for category winners. Hercules Wimbledon open their winter cross country season with a five miles inter-club match in Richmond Park on Saturday, starting at 2.30pm from near Sheen Gate. Third leg runner Adam Przedrzymirski was the fastest member of the Hercules Wimbledon team which competed in the South of England road relay championship at Aldershot. He covered the six kilometres circuit in 20:22. Other members of trhe team were Gary Blesson (20:56), Justin Kelly (20:31), Neil Fraser (22:09), Phil Glynn (21:31) and Aidan Hogan (20:32).

Hercules Wimbledon's veteran track and field team captain John Webster ended his 2006 season with a double win in St Mary's Richmond's 20th veterans and open meeting at Twickenham. Webster won the over 65 hammer and javelin with throws of 37.26 and 34.28 metres. His Hercules Wimbledon clubmate Peter Giles broke the meeting record with a good win in the over 60 3000m in 10 minutes 33.4 seconds in a faster time than Hercules Wimbledon's former marathon international Steve Badgery managed in winning the over 55 race in 10:40.1. Hercules Wimbledon's Kieran White finished eighth out of 200 runners in the Bushy Park five kilometres time trial at Hampton Wick in 17:03. Neil Fraser was 40th in 19:54 on his first appearance in the event while Estle Viljoen was sixth woman in 20:12. Fresh from her victory in the Surrey girls under 15 pentathlon championship, Hercules Wimbledon's Amelia Richards had a double success in the Lily B league Plate final at Kingsmeadow Stadium winning the 100m and long jump with 13.3 and 5.11m. She was also second in the high jump. Natasha Skeet secured maximum points in the 100m and long jump as she won both B string events. Jennifer Fernando gained an individual hat-trick in winning the under 17 100m, 800m and javelin while her twin sister Rosemary won the javelin B and was second in the 1500m A race. Another Hercules Wimbledon winner was Ali Borthwick who took the under 13 200m A race and also finished second in the 100m and long jump while Sophie Greenwood and Gabby Heaney gained maximum points in the under 15 1500m in winning the A and B string races. Sophie was also second in the high jump B. Also contributing to a good team performance were Mary Brandon, second in the under 15 75m hurdles, Caroline Hicks, third in the under 15 javelin, Jade Brooks, second in the under 15 800m B race and Megan Brown, third in the under 15 shot and discus. This weekend, Hercules Wimbledon have teams competing in the South of England road relay championships at Aldershot on Saturday.
11-09-06 - AMELIA'S GOLD MEDAL-WINNING DEBUT Hercules Wimbledon Athletic Club teenager Amelia Richards made an impressive pentathlon debut when she narrowly won the Surrey title at Crawley on Sunday. Amelia, who won't be 14 until next month, beat a 23-strong field to take the girls under 15 championship with 2784 points to win by just 33 points. She made a cautious start and was seventh after the first discipline, he shot where 6.86m. She then made her challenge for the title as she raced to victory in the 75m hurdles in 12.29 seconds, not far off her lifetime best of 12.1 achieved when winning the London schools title at Battersea Park in June. She then stretched her lead as she won the long jump with 4.92m, some way below her lifetime best of 5.35m which she achieved when she took the bronze medal in the English schools junior girls championship in July. She then tackled her first competitive high jump where she finished third with 1.48m and went into the final event, the 800m, with a 50 point lead. Although she had never tackled the two lap event before - her previous longest track race was just 200m, she ran steadily to post the fourth best time of the day with 2:31.12 to clinch the gold medal. This weekend, Amelia will wind up a most successful summer when she competes with her Hercules Wimbledon clubmates in the Lily B League finals at Kingsmeadow Stadium on Saturday. Her Hercules Wimbledon clubmate Jose Costa added to his Surrey medal collection as he took the bronze medal in the boys under 13 pentathlon. Twelve-year-old Jose picked up a quartet of medals at the main Surrey championships at Kingsmeadow in May where he won the under 13 200m in 28.53 and javelin with 30.70m and was runner-up in both the 100m and long jump. Of the five disciplines in the pentathlon he had only tackled the long jump before so the other four elements, the 75m hurdles, high jump, shot and 800m proved a particular challenge. But, he ended the competition strongly with one of the fastest 800m times of 2:28.26. Hercules Wimbledon's senior men's team made a flying start to their autumn road running programme when they snatched a set of medals in the Surrey road relay championships at Wimbledon Park for the first time for many years. They were given a solid start in the six-stage event by Adam Przedrzymirski who clocked 15:13, the fastest time of the sextet. Aidan Hogan (15:46) lifted the team from eighth to fourth place before Richard Xerri (15:44)moved into third place. Jamie Helmer (16:04) slipped to fifth place with Kieran White (15:50) dropping to sixth before Justin Kelly (15:36) stormed through to snatch the bronze medal position. The supervet over 50 team just missed out on bronze medals finishing in fourth place. The quartet was Stu Littlewood (sixth in 18:06), Steve Badgery (fourth in 17:43), Peter Giles (fourth in 17:32) and Martin Miller (fourth in 17:37). Hugh Saxby (18:24) was the fastest member of the B team which finished ninth. Hercules Wimbledon's senior women's team of Claire Cann (18:29), Amandine King (22:05), Rosemary Fernando (21:13) and Jennifer Fernando (20:00) was also ninth in the Surrey championship.
4-09-06 - WOMEN FINISH ON A HIGH NOTE Hercules Wimbledon Athletic Club's Southern Women's League team ended their season at Reading on a high note - fielding their largest-ever team and scoring their highest number of points for many years. Teenager Emily Martin had a mixed day gaining an individual hat-trick in the senior women's 200m, high jump and shot but posting three no jumps in her specialist event, the long jump. She ended the day by linking up with Laure Caussemille and sisters Flo and Amandine King to anchor Hercules Wimbledon to second in the senior sprint relay. Caussemille also had a busy afternoon with an individual hat-trick as she won the senior women's 100m, 100m hurdles and high jump B. while Flo King took the senior discus and finished third in the 200m with sister Amandine taking second in the 400m B race. Jennifer Fernando won the 400m A race and was second in the 800m before linking up with twin sister Rosemary, Amandine King and Hannah Long to win the 4x400m relay. Rosemary Fernando was also second in the 1500m, third in the 100m B race while Long gained vital points by finishing second in the 800m B race and third in the shot and discus B competitions. Best of the under 15 efforts came from Ali Borthwick with victories in the 100m B and high jump A events. Better known as an international race walker, Hercules Wimbledon's Estle Viljoen, who is currently unable to participate in her speciality due to injury, took part in the Bushy Park five kilometres race and finished third in the women's race in 20 minutes 38 seconds. Hercules Wimbledon have launched special Sunday morning training sessions at their track and field base at Wimbledon Park for youngsters under the age of 10. Youngsters between the ages of seven and 12 are being invited to join the Seven Ups 'n' Over group which meets at 10am each Sunday. The training sessions last for about an hour. Further details can be obtained from the group's coordinator Mrs Pat Yeates on 020 8640 2078. This weekend, Hercules Wimbledon are hosting the annual Surrey Road Relay Championships starting from Wimbledon Park Athletics Track at 12noon. There are races for senior and veteran men over 40 and 50 and senior and veteran women. Hercules Wimbledon will also be fielding teams in most of the championships races and will be aiming to improve on the set of silver medals they won in the men's veterans over 50 section last year when the club also closed in a team in the senior women's event for the first time.
28-08-06 - ROLL UP FOR 46TH WIMBLEDON 10 MILER Are you planning to run in next year's Flora London marathon or next month's Great North Run in Newcastle or in the New York Marathon in November? Then there is no better way to prepare for those races than to compete in Wimbledon's longest running road race which is being staged from Wimbledon Park athletics stadium on Sunday, October 1. The annual Wimbledon open 10 mile road race, organised by Hercules Wimbledon Athletic Club was launched back in 1961 and has been staged every year since without a break. This year, when it is staged for the 46th time, it is being renamed the Geoff Moulden Wimbledon 10 mile road race after one of the early organisers of the event who died suddenly last year. The event, which has been given a permit by the South of England athletic association is over an accurately measured course. The race, over a testing, undulating, three lap course which passes the All-England tennis club - location of the 2012 London Olympics tennis competition - three times, starts and finishes on Wimbledon Park athletics track. Last year's winner was Hercules Wimbledon’s own Ian Horrocks in 48 minutes 42 seconds but the race was over a reduced distance due to emergency road works on Wimbledon Parkside. Even though the road works appear to be still there organisers are confident the race will be staged over the full course on October 1. Even with the reduced course, Horrocks' winning time last year was still outside the impressive course record of 48:10 which was set by Hercules Wimbledon's own Olympic athlete Bob Holt back in 1974. Last year Hercules Wimbledon’s Andy Waites was the first over 45 finisher with Hugh Saxby the first over 50. There will be prizes for leading finishers and category winners and a medal for everyone who takes part. Details of how to enter along with an entry form can be found on the Hercules Wimbledon website www.herculeswimbledonac.org.uk Hercules Wimbledon are once again hosting the annual Surrey road relay championships on Saturday, September 9. The relays start on the track at Wimbledon Park at 12noon. There are races for senior men, veteran men over 40 and 50, senior women and veteran women. There will be medals for the first three teams in each age category plus one for the runners who posts the best time in each category. Full details of the road relays can be found on the Surrey County Athletic Association website: www.surreyathletics.org.uk/forms/roadrelays2006.pdf
21-08-06 - START TO FINISH 800 METRES WIN FOR HOGAN Hercules Wimbledon ended their track and field season with a good showing in the annual Rosenheim League final at Tooting Bec. However, the final started disastrously for Hercules Wimbledon team captain Steve Davies who went crashing when leading in the opening track event, the 400m hurdles and eventually trailed in fourth. It also meant he was forced to pull out of the high jump. Despite suffering from a niggling Achilles tendon problem, Aidan Hogan led from the gun to narrowly win the 800m in a useful 2 minutes 3.3 seconds. Top javelin thrower Bekele Tola, competing after an exhausting day working on a construction site, managed to summon up enough energy to throw 57.76 metres with his final effort to take second place. Later, he was third in the shot with 11.20 metres. Teenager Alex Bruce-Litlewood had a testing time. He finished runner-up in the 1500m in 4:16.4 and then, less than an hour later, ran in the 3000m where he was fourth in 9:52.0. At only 16, he was by far the youngest competitor in both races. Another teenager, Ka Chuen To, who was called in at the last minute to replace Davies in the high jump achieved a season's best of 1.55 metres in finishing third. To, 17, was later fourth in the triple jump with 11.08 metres. He later linked up with fellow teenager Sean Crummy, veteran Mark Baker and Dwayne Dowding to ran a leg in the 4x200m relay. Dowding found it hard going in the individual sprints but he had the consolation of posting a personal best of 11.4 in finishing fourth in the 100m. He was also third in the 200m in 23.5. Hercules Wimbledon's newly crowned Surrey over 60 five kilometres road running champion Pete Giles turned in another impressive performance when he competed in the weekly Bushy Park five kilometres time trial on Saturday morning. Giles took a massive 42 seconds off his previous best time for the course as he finished 35th out of more than 200 runners in 18:58 and easily won the over 60 section. His Hercules Wimbledon clubmate Dennis Williams was second in the over 60 category in 20:39. Entries are already being accepted for the 46th annual Geoff Moulden Wimbledon Open 10 miles road race which is being held from Hercules Wimbledon's Wimbledon Park track headquarters on Sunday, October 1, starting at 11am. Details of the event, including an entry form, can be found on the Hercules Wimbledon website: www.herculeswimbledonac.org
14/08/06 - SURREY ROAD TITLE FOR SUPERVET GILES Hercules Wimbledon Athletic Club athletes were in action on the roads at Bushy Park and West Wimbledon and on the track at Tonbridge. Pete Giles, a base guitarist with the King Crimson band group more than 30 years ago, showed that at the age of 62 he is still a force to be reckoned with - not so much on the stage as the road! Giles showed a clean pair of heels to his rivals as he took the Surrey road running five kilometres over 60 title in pouring rain over a testing, undulating course, at West Wimbledon, on Sunday. He covered the two lap circuit in 18 minutes 47 seconds to finish almost a minute ahead of the second over 60 runner. His Hercules Wimbledon clubmates Maurice Sharp and Dennis Williams were fourth and fifth in the over 60 section. First Hercules Wimbledon finisher was Gary Blesson who was fourth veteran in 17:25. Medena Knespl was 11th in the women's race in 19:39. Hercules Wimbledon's Adam Przedrzymirski, the club's top 5000m track runner this summer, made an impressive debut in the Bushy Park five kilometres road race on Saturday finishing runner-up in 16:39. Joe Toomey, who is only 13, was 23rd in 18:59 with Dennis Williams first over 60 finishing 68th in 21:12. Hercules Wimbledon's Southern Women's League team ended their programme on a high note with their best performance of the season at Tonbridge, despite being weakened by holiday absences. Torrential rain failed to dampen the enthusiasm of the team as double Surrey champion Amelia Richards gained a hat-trick of wins. Battling into a headwind she won the girls under 15 100m in 13.1 seconds and also took the 200m in 27.2 and long jump with 4.86 metres. Another winner was Jade Brooks who took the under 15 javelin B and she narrowly failed to make it a double as she was just edged out in the 800m A race where she posted the same time as the winner only to be placed second. Mary Brandon was runner-up in the javelin A. Claire Cann, making her second league appearance, won the 3000m in 10:55.4 with Rosemary Fernando taking the B race to secure maximum points. Her twin sister Jennifer gained more valuable points by winning the senior 800m. Cann also won the 1500m. Although injury prevented her from racing, triple Surrey indoor champion Emily Martin competed in five field events winning the senior women's long jump with 5.29 metres and also took the high jump and was second in the shot, discus and javelin. Laure Cassemille won the 100m hurdles A race and high jump B event and was runner-up in the 100m. Hercules Wimbledon's double Surrey boys under 13 champion Jose Costa helped Surrey win their six-sided inter-county under 13 match at Kingsmeadow when he finished third in the javelin with 30.78 metres.
7/08/06 - ATHLETES SHINE AT BIRMINGHAM AND HASTINGS Hercules Wimbledon Athletic Club athletes were in top class action at Hastings and Birmingham. While teenager Amelia Richards produced a lifetime 100 metres best in the AAA Championships, the senior men's team produced their best performance of the season to win their final match at Hastings. Young Amelia who is only 13 was in fine form in the AAA Championships at Birmingham where she reached the final of the girls under 15 100m. She finished third in her heat in 12.80 seconds to progress to the semi-final where she was again third but in a much faster time of 12.6, which was a personal best. She then finished seventh in the final in 12.72. She also contested the long jump where she finished sixth with 5.11 metres, slightly below her best. Meanwhile, the Southern Men's League team's produced wonders in their final match at Hastings. They went into the contest in the relegation zone of their division and on the back of a disappointing season in which their best match placing has been two third spots. The team knew it needed to perform and despite being held up in traffic jams on the way to the South Coast it came out trumps - to the astonishment of stand-in team manager Nick Getting it won and staved off relegation. Outstanding individual was former junior international Austin Ferns who fought hard throughout the afternoon for the team. He started off winning the 400m hurdles B race in 60.3, then posted a lifetime best of 15.1 in winning the sprint hurdles, and a few minutes later took second place in the 200m A race in 23.2. He was also second in both the javelin and triple jump B events with 35.22 and 11.08 metres. Hen then completed an energy-sapping afternoon by helping the 4x400m relay team to victory. It was like the Battle of Hastings 2006 as endurance runner Aidan Hogan literally fought his way to third place in the 800m. He was racing down the finishing straight when he was baulked by another runner and was forced to step out and stop. Frustrated by his momentum being broken, Hogan then thumped his rival but had the consolation of posting a lifetime best of 1:59.0. Later he did secure an individual win as he took the 3000m steeplechase. Team captain Steve Davies also worked hard securing maximum points in winning the sprint hurdles B race, taking second place in the high jump B, and taking third in the 400m hurdles in a season's best of 57.4 and gained a valuable four points in the pole vault where he was runner-up in the B event. He also ran a leg for the winning 4x400m relay team. Javelin thrower Bekele Tola managed to win with 56.53 metres, modest by his standards, after injuring his hand in the pole vault. He was also second in the shot with clubmate John Brown taking third in the B event. Brown was also third in the discus B. Veteran Mark Baker gained valuable points with third places in the 100 and 200m B races. "It was a great result with tremendous team spirit throughout the afternoon. Everyone performed hard and I was delighted to have been the manager of a winning team," said Getting, who normally looks after Hercules Wimbledon's UK National Young Athletes squad. Match result: 1, Hercules Wimbledon 122.5; 2, Hastings 110; 3, Royal Navy 99; 4, Luton United 95.5; 5, Thurrock 92.5. Hercules Wimbledon runners will be competing in the Surrey five kilometres road running championship starting from Cottenham Park Road, West Wimbledon, on Sunday while Hercules Wimbledon is sending a team to Tonbridge on Saturday for the final Southern Women's League match. Next Wednesday (August 16) Hercules Wimbledon compete in the Rosenheim League final at Tooting Bec.
31/07/06 - WALCOTT'S DOUBLE GOLD AT EURO CHAMPS Hercules Wimbledon Athletic Club's Geoff Walcott ended almost two weeks of action at the European Veterans track and field Championships in Poznan, Poland, on Sunday with a double gold winning effort. He ran the third leg for the British men's over 50 4x100m relay team which took the gold medals in 46.21 seconds and then, a short time later, ran the second leg for the 4x400m relay team which also lifted the gold medals in 3:43.12. Walcott, 54, earlier took he individual bronze medal in the 400m in 53.89 to add to the 100m bronze he won at the start of he championships. However, he just failed to make it a hat-trick of individual medals as he was edged out of the medals in the 200m where he had to settle for fourth place in the final in 24.45, just two-tenths of a second behind the bronze medallist. However, Walcott was delighted with his efforts. "These are my first individual international medals. To come away with two and also two relay gold medals is really pleasing," said a delighted Walcott. Meanwhile, his Hercules Wimbledon clubmates comfortably qualified for the Rosenheim League final which is being held at Tooting Bec track on Wednesday, August 16, with another impressive series of performances in their final east division match at Tooting Bec. Hercules Wimbledon's only winner was Deon Coetzee who the high jump with 1.65 metres in his first competition in the event for several years. James Trapmore was runner-up in both the 800 and 3000m while Aidan Hogan was second in the 1500m and 2000m steeplechase. Other useful Hercules Wimbledon efforts came from Jonathan Grayson, Stuart Milton and Hamed Agboke who were second in the long jump, javelin and 400m. The Hercules Wimbledon quartet of KC To, Deji Alli, Grayson and Agboke ended the match by taking second place in the 4x200m relay. Hercules Wimbledon face a crucial Southern Men's League match at Hastings on Saturday. They will be hoping to repeat the level of their performance in their last match at Walton were Bekele Tola won the javelin with a superb throw of 61.44 metres with Stu Milton taking the B event with 38.95 metres. Hercules Wimbledon runners also took maximum points in he 800m where Aidan Hogan and Esmond Ferns were the winners. Hercules Wimbledon held a successful Come and Try It day at their Wimbledon Park track with almost 50 youngsters from Merton and Wandsworth turning up to run, jump and throw under the guidance of the club's team of coaches.
24/07/06 - EURO MEDAL FOR HW'S WALCOTT IN POLAND Hercules Wimbledon Athletic Club's Geoff Walcott is celebrating winning his first individual medal in an international competition in the European Veterans Athletics Championships in Poznan, Poland. Walcott, 54, was just edged out of silver medal position in the men's over 50 100m final after posting the third fastest time in the heats. He took the bronze medal in 11.97 seconds, just three-hundredths behind the silver medallist. Walcott, who helped the British team to silver medals in the World Masters Championships in Linz, Austria, earlier this year, was unable to reproduce his heat form in the final. He won his 100m heat in a much faster 11.84. "But, I'm more than pleased as this is my first ever international individual medal," said a satisfied Walcott. just missed out on a medal in the over 45 100m where he was fourth in 12.18. Walcott looked set for more medal-winning performances after winning his 400m heat on Monday in 54.96, the second fastest of the 16 semi-final qualifiers. Hercules Wimbledon teenager Emily Martin was unable to produce her best form when she competed in the AAA championships at Bedford. Emily, lifted the Surrey senior girls long jump title last month with a personal best of 5.66 metres, could only manage 5.51 metres on Sunday to finish eighth in a high standard competition. Meanwhile another Hercules Wimbledon teenager Medena Knespl, on holiday from her American University studies, was an impressive winner of the women's race in the Bushy Park five kilometres event in 19:13. Her time took 48 seconds off her previous best for the course. She finished just two seconds behind former marathon international Steve Badgery, now 59, who managed to improve on his previous best time by 19 seconds. However, the fastest Hercules Wimbledon runner in the race was 14-year-old Joe Toomey who finished who finished 12th out of more than 150 runners in 18:27, slicing just one second off his previous best time for the course. Further down the field, Dennis Williams was first over 60 finisher in 50th place in 20:45. Best of the trio was 13-year-old Amelia Richards, who was making her English schools debut and who produced the leap of her young life in the junior girls long jump to snatch the bronze medal with her very final effort.
