8/09/03 - WALKER ESTLE GAINS FIRST INTERNATIONAL

Hercules Wimbledon Athletic Club's ace woman race walker Estle Viljoen is celebrating fulfilling one of her life's ambitions by winning her first international vest.

The 31-year-old Mitcham schoolteacher has been chosen to represent her native South Africa in the women's 20 kilometres road walk in next month's African Games in Nigeria. During the summer, Estle significantly improved on her best time for the distance and heads both the British and South African rankings for the event. She is around three minutes ahead of the second best South African and 19 seconds faster than the top British woman walker.

What really convinced the South African selectors was her performance in the European Grand Prix in Dublin in July when she clocked 1hr 42min 14sec behind Ireland's Gillian O'Sullivan who went on to win a silver medal in the World Championships in Paris. Estle took more than two minutes off her previous best time for the distance in Dublin, but, much to her disappointment, the South African selectors failed to name her for Paris.

However, her patience was rewarded when, while on a flying visit to see her family in South Africa, she was given the news of her first international selection. "Since I was a child of about five or six years I have dreamt of representing South Africa," said Estle, whose celebrations are bound to be supported by her colleagues and pupils at Haslemere School, Mitcham, staff and fellow members at Canons health and fitness club at Wimbledon where she trains regularly and members of Hercules Wimbledon Athletic Club.

Estle said:"My father gave up on my dream ages ago but it shows where persistence leads to." What is even more remarkable was that Estle only switched to race walking a few years back when a persistent foot injury stopped her running.

Another cause for celebration for Hercules Wimbledon Athletic Club is the return of the club's long serving treasurer David Littlewood to the technical committee of the International Association of Athletics Federations after a four year break. Littlewood, who has been Hercules Wimbledon's treasurer for 43 years, is one of Britain's most experienced officials and since 1981 has been secretary of the UK Rules Revision Group, which is responsible for writing the rules handbook issued by UK Athletics. This weekend, he is officiating at the IAAF World Athletics Final in Monaco.

Hercules Wimbledon are hosting the annual Surrey Road Relay Championships which are being staged from their Wimbledon Park track headquarters this weekend. The relays, for men and women and veterans age groups, are being held on Saturday and start at 12noon. Meanwhile, Hercules Wimbledon's youngsters are competing in their final Lily B League match of the season at Kingsmeadow Stadium, also on Saturday.

Entries have been pouring in for the 43rd annual Wimbledon open 10 miles road race, organised by Hercules Wimbledon Athletic Club, which is being staged on Sunday, October 5, starting at 11am. There is still room for runners to take part and every finisher will receive a commemorative medal. The race starts and finishes at Wimbledon Park athletics stadium. 1/09/03 - HW ATHLETES WIN FOR SURREY

Hercules Wimbledon Athletic Club members at both ends of the age spectrum have been in action for Surrey.

Two of the club's most talented youngsters, teenagers Emily Martin and Ike Mba showed winning form when they competed for Surrey in the South of England inter-counties championship meeting at Tilsley Park, Abingdon.

Fourteen-year-old Emily, who took the girls under 15 long jump silver medal at the AAA championships in Sheffield last month, was certainly the busier of the pair as she won the girls under 15 long jump with an impressive leap of 5.46 metres and also finished fourth in both the 100 metres in 13.47sec, battling against a strong 3.1metres per second headwind, and the 200 metres where she clocked a personal best time of 26.38 metres. That too was against a hefty headwind of 2.5 metres per es helped Surrey to take third place in the match out of 19 competing counties.

Ike,16, who triumphed by taking the men's under 17 long jump title at Sheffield, returned to something like his best form as he switched back to his main event the triple jump.Despite competing against athletes considerably older than himself, he showed impressive form to win with 13.48 metres, equalling his lifetime best achieved competing for his club in their final Southern Men's League match.

Meanwhile, at the other end of the age range, four Hercules Wimbledon athletes were in action for Surrey in a four-sided veterans inter-county match at Kingsmeadow. Top veteran sprinter Mark Baker was in fine form as he took the over 40 100 and 200 metres races in 11.8 and 24.3sec. Supervet Martin Miller was second in the over 50 800 metres and third in the 400 metres while Stu Littlewood took second place in the over 50 1500 metres B race. Oldest member of the quartet, John Webster, was runner-up in the men's over 60 javelin.

Hercules Wimbledon all-rounder Andy Laughton had a field day at the annual Veterans Athletic Club championships at Battersea Park. He gained a quartet of gold medals winning the over 45 sprint hurdles, pole vault, triple jump and javelin. He was also runner-up in the high jump, shot and discus and hird in the long jump. At the same meeting Webster won the over 60 long jump and was second in the pole vault and javelin and fourth in the hammer while Baker was just pipped in the over 40 100 metres where he shared the winning time.

The 43rd annual Wimbledon open 10 miles road race, organised by Hercules Wimbledon Athletic Club is being staged on Sunday, October 5, starting at 11am. The race starts and finishes at Wimbledon Park athletics stadium. 25/08/03 - WINNING FINALE FOR HW YOUNGSTERS

Hercules Wimbledon Athletic Club's youngsters produced their best team effort of the season when they shared the team honours in their final Ebbisham Young Athletes League match at Kingsmeadow Stadium.

A good crop of individual wins helped the Hercules Wimbledon squad tie the team contest on 83 points with Guildford and Godalming, comfortably beating Sutton and District (44) and Haslemere Border (30).

Best of the Hercules Wimbledon athletes was Richard Hadley who gaiend two wins in the under 13 events, the 80 metres hurdles and 800 metres. Henry Ivezic ensured maximum points in the hurdles by taking the B race in a faster time than Hadley. He was also second in the long jump B. Jonathan Burgess also guaranteed top points in the 800 metres by taking the B race. He was also second in both the 1500 metres and discus.

Busiest of the under 13 youngsters was Anthony Jepson who was second in the long jump and fourth in both the 100 and 200 metres.

Hercules Wimbledon also had three winners in the under 15 events.Jake Bodin took the 800 metres and was running-up in the 400 metres, Oliver Stogdale won the 80 metres hurdles and was second in the discus B and fourth in the 200 metres and Doug Hunt won the discus A. 18/08/03 - SURPRISE GOLD FOR JUMPER IKE

The small three-strong Hercules Wimbledon Athletic Club squad that competed in the AAA under 17 and under 15 track and field championships at Don Valley Stadium, Sheffield, performed well and returned with two medals - one gold and one silver.

Outstanding member of the trio was jumper Ike Mba who achieved the surprise of his life, as well as one of the upsets of the championships, by taking the men's under 17 long jump gold medal after a dramatic contest. The 16-year-old Surrey schools intermediate boys triple jump champion had to battle all the way and managed to clinch the title with his final leap of 6.79 metres, just one centimetre better than the runner-up. He led the the first three rounds but was then overtaken before bouncing back with his final effort.

Mba only entered the long jump as a second event intending to concentrate on the triple jump. But, he was bitterly disappointed after he flopped in his speciality jumping only 12.58 metres, almost a metre below his personal best, and failing to make the last eight. "I was really down after that", said Mba. "But, before going to the track on Sunday, I prayed with my mum. After that, I knew I was going to do well and I had confidence in myself."

Mba had previously only competed in two long jump competitions this summer and his winning leap was a massive improvement on his previous best of 6.38 metres achieved at Hercules Wimbledon's HAC Young Athletes Memorial Trophy at Wimbledon Park last month. Mba explained he adopted a new techique after watching competitors in the World Champiomships trials and now uses the hitch-kick. He also worked with his coach Dennis Roll at getting his run-up right in the week before the championships.

"My run-up is much improved and I was hitting the board. But, I was quite shocked at winning. I thought I'd do around 6.70 metres but I didn't think that would be good enough to take gold. I'm really pleased about it," said the delighted new national champion.

Another Hercules Wimbledon teenager to do well at Sheffield was 14-year-old Emily Martin, the Surrey junior girls 100 metres and long jump champions. Emily managed to take the bronze medal in the girls under 15 long jump in a really testing competition. At one point she was in second place but then slipped to fifth until her final leap got her the well wearned bronze medal. She was bitterly unlucky not to get the silver because her best effort was the same as the girl who came second but she lost out on the silver medal on count-back - her second best leap was inferior to her rival's.

The third Hercules Wimbledon athlete at Sheffield, Surrey schools intermediate girls discus champion Jade Lally also performed well in her first-ever national appearance getting through the qualifying round of her event. She finished eighth in the women's under 17 discus with a throw of more than 33 metres.

11/08/03 - TALENTED TRIO IN TITLE CHASE

Three of Hercules Wimbledon Athletic Club's most talented young athletes will be battling for honours in this weekend's AAA under 15 and 17 championships at Sheffield's Don Valley Stadium.

Heading the trio is 14-year-old Emily Martin, the London Schools junior girls and Surrey County girls under 15 long jump champions. She is competing in her speciality, the long jump, at which she improved her personal best and Hercules Wimbledon club record in finishing just outside the medals in the English Schools Championships, also at Sheffield. Emily will be hoping to go one better and get among the medals on her return to Don Valley. She is also competing in the 100 metres at which distance she is the Surrey champion.

Ike Mba, who won the Surrey Schools intermediate boys triple jump title with a then lifetime best of 13.41 metres, competes in the men's under 17 long and triple jumps at Sheffield. Since his county schools success, Mba has improved his personal best to 13.48 metres and if he can show anything like his best form has a good chance of getting among the medals at Sheffield.

Completing the Hercules Wimbledon trio travelling north is Jade Lally, the Surrey Schools intermediate girls discus champion. She was unlucky not to compete at the English Schools championships but unfortunately, she achieved the entry standard after Surrey submitted their team.

Lally warmed up for Sheffield with a hat-trick of wins in Hercules Wimbledon's third Lily B League match of the season at Guildford. She won the high jump with a personal best of 1.55 metres, shot (8.53 metres) and discus (33.51 metres). Hercules Wimbledon Athletic Club ended their Southern Men's League programme in fine style producing their best team effort of the season.

After finishing runners-up three times, the squad finally gained their first team win of the summer in their sixth and final league match at Portsmouth where they also posted their highest points score of the season. They are hoping they may have done just enough to secure promotion with this eyes out final effort.

He celebrated his 16th birthday by producing the form of his life to win the triple jump with 13.48 metres, adding seven centimetres to his previous best set when winning the Surrey schools title. He also helped Hercules Wimbledon gain maximum points in the 400 metres hurdles where he took the B race after team-mate Steve Davies won the a competition.

Estle, who teaches at Mitcham's Haslemere Primary School, is favourite to take the gold medal in the women's 10 kilometres championship which is being held on Saturday.

The Hercules Wimbledon athlete, who is the top woman race walker in both the South of England and Surrey, proved she is in superb form when she finished third against a world class field in the European AA Grand Prix race walking meeting in Dublin. She smashed her personal best with her performance in the women's 20 kilometres road walk in which she clocked 1hr 42min 14sec finishing behind Ireland's Gillian O'Sullivan who won in 1hr 29min 22sec and Turkey's Yeliz Ay who broke her national record with 1hr 38min 29sec.

14/07/03 - EMILY JUST MISSES OUT ON A MEDAL

Hercules Wimbledon Athletic Club's outstanding young athlete, Emily Martin, showed the form of her young life at the English Schools track and field championships at Don Valley Stadium, Sheffield, leaping to a personal best performance in the junior girls long jump.

Emily, 14, managed 5.57 metres to add more than 10 centimetres to her previous best set earlier this year to also break her own Hercules Wimbledon club record. Although she was naturally delighted with her achievement there was a tinge of disappointment for Emily as she just failed to secure a medal in the event. Her performance placed her fourth just seven centimetres behind the bronze medallist.

Emily, who goes to Burntwood School, Tooting, was chosen to represent London after winning the London Schools title at the Millennium Arena, Battersea Park, last month. There was further disappointment for young Emily when the London schools quartet of which she was a member failed to get further than the opening round of the 4x100 metres relay.

Another Hercules Wimbledon athlete in action at Sheffield, Ike Mba, the Surrey Schools intermediate boys triple jump champion, had a disappointing time. He finished 15th in the final at Sheffield with 13.12 metres, some 30 centimetres below his best achieved in winning the Surrey schools golds medal.

Meanwhile, there was an encouraging team effort from a squad of Hercules Wimbledon youngsters in the second of this season's Lily B Girls League meetings at Sutton Arena. The team includes Mba's younger sister Rebeccawho gained valuable points in the under 15 section finishing second in the 100 metres and shotand fourth in the 200 metres and helping Hercules Wimbledon to victory in the sprint relay. Imogen Stoddart took second place in the 800 metres, won the shot B and was second in the javelin B.

Jade Lally, who just failed to make the Surrey team for the English schools championships, had a busy time in the under 17 section where she won the shot and discus and was second in the javelin. Her Hercules Wimbledon clubmate Maureen Njuguna won the discus and javelin B events and was second in the shot B.

This weekend, Hercules Wimbledon compete in their final National Young Athletes League meeting of the summer at Bracknell on Sunday. The team coach will leave from South Wimbledon station at 10am.

Jade Lally, the Surrey schools intermediate girls discus champion is most unlucky not to have made the county team for the English Schools Championships. She won the under 17 discus at Portsmouth with a personal best throw of 34.02 metres - two centimetres over the English Schools entry standard - but just too late to be entered by Surrey. Jade also won the javelin with 26.93 metres and was second in the shot with 9.14 metres.
